The Early Years Foundation Stage
At Bunnies Daycare, we adhere to the statutory framework of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) to ensure high-quality early education and care for all children. The EYFS provides a structured yet flexible curriculum designed to support children’s learning and development from birth to five years old.
Our approach is guided by the four overarching principles of the EYFS:
- A Unique Child – We recognize that every child is an individual with their own strengths and needs. We provide tailored support to promote their learning and well-being.
- Positive Relationships – We foster secure, warm, and supportive relationships between children, staff, and families to create a nurturing learning environment.
- Enabling Environments – Our setting is designed to encourage exploration, curiosity, and independent learning through well-planned activities and resources.
- Seven Key Areas of Development - These seven key areas are...
1. Communication and Language
This area focuses on how children understand and use language and their communication skills. This includes -
- Talking with children throughout the day (nappy changes, mealtimes, play)
- Singing songs, nursery rhymes and action rhymes
- Sharing stories and encouraging children to join in
- Modelling new vocabulary (e.g. “You’re pouring carefully”)
2. Physical Development
This area supports children’s movement, coordination and self-care skills. This includes -
- Crawling, climbing, balancing and outdoor play
- Using tools like paintbrushes, spoons, scissors and pencils
- Supporting independence with dressing, toileting and feeding
- Promoting healthy routines and hygiene
3. Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED)
This area helps children learn who they are and how to relate to others. This includes -
- Forming secure attachments with key persons
- Learning to share, take turns and manage emotions
- Supporting children through transitions and changes
- Encouraging independence and confidence
4. Literacy
Literacy is about developing a love of books, stories and early writing. This includes -
- Sharing books daily and talking about pictures
- Singing rhymes to develop sound awareness
- Mark making with crayons, chalk, paint and pens
- Recognising familiar signs, symbols and names
5. Mathematics
- Maths is taught through practical, everyday experiences. This includes -
- Counting during play and routines
- Talking about size, shape, weight and capacity
- Sorting objects and noticing patterns
- Using number language naturally (more, fewer, empty, full)
6. Understanding the World
This area helps children make sense of their world and communities.
- Exploring nature, seasons and animals
- Learning about family, culture and celebrations
- Using technology (e.g. tablets, toys with buttons)
- Talking about past events and routines
7. Expressive Arts and Design
- This area supports creativity, imagination and self-expression.
- Painting, drawing, junk modelling and messy play
- Role play and small world play
- Music, singing, dancing and instruments
- Exploring colour, texture, sound and movement
Our practitioners follow EYFS guidance to plan age-appropriate activities that encourage children’s development through play-based learning. We continuously observe and assess progress to ensure that each child receives the support they need to achieve their full potential.
By implementing the EYFS framework, Bunnies Daycare provides a stimulating and supportive foundation for children’s early education, helping them develop key skills for future learning and school readiness.
